“Tell him.”

“No. He’ll just worry about me, and he’s got enough going on right now.” I brushed my tussled hair and pulled it into a ponytail.

Cooper sat on my bathroom counter. “He’s going to find out, and he’ll be upset.”

“I’ll tell him if something else happens.”

“That’s lying by omission,” he said. “You hate when someone does that to you.”

I swiped a makeup remover wipe under my eyes and tossed it in the garbage. “If I tell him, he’ll ask me to stop snooping in his investigation, and you know I can’t do that. I need to prove Stella’s innocent.” A light above us flickered. “Oh, I have an idea!” I rushed out of the bathroom and threw on a clean pair of jeans. “Be right back.” I disappeared before Cooper could respond and returned a minute later.

“That was cheating,” he said. “And it was bad cheating, too. I know you went to Bessie’s.” He shook his head. “I know what you took. You can’t do it. Even Bessie would tell you it’s wrong.”

I stared at Bessie’s family book of spells. “I’m not doing anything.”

Cooper climbed on top of the book. “You’re thinking about it, but you can’t do it.”

I dropped onto my couch and moaned. “Why not? Bessie said I could borrow the book for whatever I needed whenever I needed it.”

“That doesn’t include casting a spell to reveal Patrick’s murderer.”

“I just want this done. I want things with Stella back to normal, and I don’t want to risk being Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz again.”

“Come on, Abby. We both know that’s not how this works. The Divine Collective won’t give you the correct answer. The whole reason they gave me the intel was so you could find the killer.”

“But maybe it’ll clear Stella.”

“You’ll make things worse.”

Gabe tapped on my door while saying, “Is it unlocked?”

“It is,” I said. “Come on in.” I quickly flicked my wrist and hid the spell book under my bed, sending Cooper under there on accident.

“Gee, thanks,” he said as he crawled out. “Tell him.”

Sometimes I wished my cat was like every other cat. I whipped around and smiled at Gabe. “Hey!”

He closed the door behind him. “Have you talked to Stella yet?”

“You heard?”

“She came by the station. Does she always get that red when she’s angry?”

I adjusted my position and tucked my left foot under my right leg. “She must have held it together then. She can rip someone apart with words when she’s really mad.” I tapped my left finger on my right arm.

He sat beside me and kissed me on the forehead. “She’s fine now.”

“But she’s still on your suspect list?”

“Until one of us clears her or we locate our killer. Do I think she did it? No, but I have to do my job.”

“And she knows this?”

“She knows I have to do my due diligence.”

“Then she’s still mad.” I leaned my head onto his shoulder. “She hates me.”

He squeezed my thigh. “She doesn’t hate you.”

I sat up again and looked into his eyes.
